Gatorade Versus Water

For the last forty years, the question of whether Gatorade or water is better has swirled, endlessly fueled by staunch supporters of either side. After all, we all know that hydration is important, but is it even possible that there is a better method of hydration than plain old water?

In order to understand the argument between water and Gatorade, it helps to understand a little about the history of Gatorade. Gatorade was first created by researchers at the University of Florida, when the head football coach asked them if there was a way for the team to be less sluggish after hot practices. Gatorade was immortalized not long afterward, when the Florida Gators defeated Georgia Tech in the 1967 Orange Bowl, and the Tech coach claimed his team had lost because they did not have Gatorade on their side.

Of course, you probably already know that Gatorade is designed to "replenish" your body, in ways that water alone supposedly cannot do. And this, in fact, is the basis of the answer to the question: Which is better, water or Gatorade?

When you sweat, your body loses more than just water; Gatorade is scientifically designed to replenish these elements in addition to replenishing water, which makes it extremely valuable to athletes. While athletes can stick to a specific diet that will replicate the effects of Gatorade when water is included in the diet, it is much easier to pop open a bottle of Gatorade!

On the other hand, Gatorade includes sugars and other elements that are not necessary for the body when at rest. After all, if a person is sitting on a couch and watching a movie, they are not losing much from their body through sweat, and so, they are not needing to "replenish" any elements they might otherwise be losing!

For athletes, the best approach to take with Gatorade is to drink plenty of water leading up to an event, and then to consume plenty of Gatorade during the event. And if you are not an athlete, try to drink Gatorade as sparingly as you drink soda or other sugar-filled drinks; after all, if you are not losing buckets of sweat, there is no need to replenish!

Two studies have shown that the green coffee bean extract found in some Hydroxycut products promotes weight loss.
