Are Vitamin K Supplements Necessary?

Are you considering taking vitamin K supplements? Vitamin K creams and vitamin K supplements have gained popularity in some circles, but you need a doctor's advice before you try these out.

Your body needs vitamin K to grow properly. Vitamin K also facilitates blood clotting. Most people get enough vitamin K from their regular diets and never even need to think about vitamin K. Animal products such as meat and dairy, are chock full of vitamin K, as are leafy greens. You don't need much vitamin K, so you most likely get plenty from your diet.

However, some people have blood clotting issues, requiring the administration of vitamin K. This is usually prescribed as a tablet or capsule, but can also be sold as a cream. You will want to get it prescribed by a doctor so you know what dosage to take. Often newborns will show signs of poor blood clotting, and will receive injections of vitamin K to aid blood clotting.

Some popular reasons for taking vitamin K are the following: circles under the eyes, bruising, and to supplement cancer patients during treatment. Make sure you check with your doctor before taking vitamin K for these medical condiitions. The study of the effect on vitamin K on cancer treatments is still very new, and the only cancer studied so far is colon cancer. More studies are needed before sweeping statements can be made regarding vitamin K and cancer.

You can put your self in danger if you take vitamin K supplements and already have a tendency towards developing blood clots. Take for instance, the case of someone who uses oral birth control pills and is already at risk for blood clots; this person should not use vitamin K, especially not for something as insignificant as circles under the eyes.

For optimal safety, always talk to your doctor before taking vitamin K supplements.
